This is a great movie with Viacheslav Trofimov, Mikhail Chernozhukov, Svetlana Volkova, Mikhail Yegorov, Igor Yan

Basically it’s about:
The ostensible subject of Prokofiev’s surrealistic comedy The Love for Three Oranges is a fairy tale similar to Mozart’s The Magic Flute: a prince on a qust for a beautiful princess with whom he has fallen in love from a distance; villains of horrifying (though comic) nastiness; magic charms and enchantments (for example, the princess is turned into a rat); and a titanic struggle between the forces of good and evil. But in its subtext, it is an opera about opera, beginning with a near-riot. The chorus is divided into two groups–opera patrons in tuxedos demanding a serious drama and stage hands in working clothes who insist on a comedy.

In one dimension, this work is a discussion of operatic styles and conventions, and this is the level on which the Opera de Lyon production triumphs most decisively. Its style is self-consciously brilliant, as it should be. The performers’ acting style is as important as their voices, and they have refined every verbal nuance, every gesture, to perfection, including a lot of pure slapstick. This opera, in this production, will appeal particularly to two types of audience: sophisticates who will relish its subtexts, parodies, insider jokes, and chic staging, and children who will be attracted by the story of a prince (son of the King of Clubs) who angers a witch and suffers a terrible curse: he will fall hopelessly in love with three oranges. –Joe McLellan

Welcome to Oscar’s Barbershop, recently inherited by Oscar’s son Clifton. Clifton’s got it made – a successful business, luck with the ladies- but he still lives with Mama. She rules the roost, and dispenses advice to everyone who’ll listen (and some who won’t). Clifton’s sister Tracy, brother-in-law Leonard, friends Earl and Junior, barbershop regulars Wildcat and Josh; no one is spared from Mama’s wisdom. And they wouldn’t have it any other way. A hidden gem of 1970s television comedy, “That’s My Mama” was a highlight in the careers of Clifton Davis and Jester Hairston (both of TV’s “Amen”) and Ted Lange (Isaac on “The Love Boat”) and featured gust appearances by Tim Reid and Gordon Jump, both of whom went on to star in the hit show “WKRP in Cincinnati.”

If you haven’t heard of Glass Fleet – Starter Set, here’s a quick plot:

Revolution is at hand! Noble Michel Volban leads the People’s Army in a rebellion among the stars as aristocrats and commoners alike take up arms and rally towards war. The Holy Imperial Emperor Vetti uses force and manipulation to unite the heavens under his rule, led by a mystical prophesy that falls on the ears of those that seek to control and those that seek to liberate. Factions clash and alliances are formed and broken and freedom carries a blood stained blade.

Through the smoke, a fantastic glass battleship pierces the very heart of destiny, piloted by stoic Cleo; the last remaining vessel of royal blood and potential savior of the weary populace. Glorious victory is nigh but which crest will fly in the wind once the battle ceases?

If you like Yuko Kaida, then you’ll LOVE Glass Fleet – Starter Set! Watch it for the first time, or just watch it again! I really enjoyed this movie.

Kevin Smith is a conundrum of a filmmaker: he’s a writer with brilliant, clever ideas who can’t set up a simple shot to save his life. It was fine back when Smith was making low-budget films like Clerks and Chasing Amy, both of which had an amiable, grungy feel to them, but now that he’s a rising director who’s attracting top talent and tackling bigger themes, it might behoove him to polish his filmmaking. That’s the main problem with Dogma–it’s an ambitious, funny, aggressively intelligent film about modern-day religion, but while Smith’s writing has matured significantly (anyone who thinks he’s not topnotch should take a look at Chasing Amy), his direction hasn’t. It’s too bad, because Dogma is ripe for near-classic status in its theological satire, which is hardly as blasphemous as the protests that greeted the movie would lead you to believe.

Two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) have discovered a loophole that would allow them back into heaven; problem is, they’d destroy civilization in the process by proving God fallible. It’s up to Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), a lapsed Catholic who works in an abortion clinic, to save the day, with some help from two so-called prophets (Smith and Jason Mewes, as their perennial characters Jay and Silent Bob), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a sexy, heavenly muse (the sublime Salma Hayek, who almost single-handedly steals the film). In some ways Dogma is a shaggy dog of a road movie–which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they’re mortal enemies–and segus into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven. Smith’s cast is exceptional–with Fiorentino lending a sardonic gravity to the proceedings, and Jason Lee smirking evilly as the horned devil Azrael–and the film shuffles good-naturedly to its climax (featuring Alanis Morissette as a beatifically silent God), but it just looks so unrelentingly… subpar. Credit Smith with being a daring writer but a less-than-stellar director. –Mark Englehart
