The second film in Oliver Stone’s Vietnam trilogy moves from the brutality of war in Platoon to its equally traumatic aftermath. Based on the memoir of combat veteran Ron Kovic, the film stars Tom Cruise as Kovic, whose gunshot wound in Vietnam left him paralyzed from the chest down. He is deeply embittered by neglect in a veteran’s hospital and by the shattering of his patriotic idealism because of the horror and futility of the Vietnam conflict. While painfully and awkwardly adjusting to his disability and a changing definition of masculinity, Kovic joins the burgeoning movement of antiwar protest, culminating in a climactic appearance at the 1976 Democratic national convention. A powerfully intimate portrait that unfolds on an epic scale, Born on the Fourth of July is arguably Stone’s best film (if you can forgive its often strident tone), and Cruise’s Oscar-nominated role is uncompromising in its depiction of one man’s personal anguish and political awakening. –Jeff Shannon

*** watch Male and Female!! ***
Cecil B. DeMille’s breakthrough production, a satire on class distinctions. Based on James M. Barrie’s play “The Admirable Crichton,” “Male and Female” made a star of Gloria Swanson (QUn Kelly) and solidified DeMille’s standing as a big box office director with one of his more modest, but no less ‘big’ silent classics.
Male and Female is awesome. I’ve probably seen it 20 times, and I never get tired of it. Have you seen it? If you click the image above you can learn how you can watch it now, or any time.

Thought you might like to know the best place to watch The Sting online. This is THE place taking the Internet by storm. Check it out for yourself right now – you can thank me later.

*** Download The Sting Online!! ***
Winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay, this critical and box-office hit from 1973 provided a perfect reunion for director George Roy Hill and stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford, who previously delighted audiences with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Set in 1936, the movie’s about a pair of Chicago con artists (Newman and Redford) who find themselves in a high-stakes game against the master of all cheating mobsters (Robert Shaw) when they set out to avenge the murder of a mutual friend and partner. Using a bogus bookie joint as a front for their con of all cons, the two feel the heat from the Chicago Mob on one side and encroaching police on the other. But in a plot that contains more twists than a treacherous mountain road, the ultimate scam is pulled off with consummate style and panache. It’s an added bonus that Newman and Redford were box-office kings at the top of their game, and while Shaw broods intensely as the Runyonesqu villain, The Sting is further blessed by a host of great supporting players including Dana Elcar, Eileen Brennan, Ray Walston, Charles Durning, and Harold Gould. Thanks to the flavorful music score by Marvin Hamlisch, this was also the movie that sparked a nationwide revival of Scott Joplin’s ragtime jazz, which is featured prominently on the soundtrack. One of the most entertaining movies of the early 1970s, The Sting is a welcome throwback to Hollywood’s golden age of the ’30s that hasn’t lost any of its popular charm. –Jeff Shannon

*** watch Babel [HD DVD]!! ***
Brilliantly conceived, superbly directed, and beautifully acted, Babel is inarguably one of the best films of 2006. Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and his co-writer, Guillermo Arriaga (the two also collaborated on Amores Perros and 21 Grams) weave together the disparate strands of their story into a finely hewn fabric by focusing on what appear to be several equally incongrunt characters: an American (Brad Pitt) touring Morocco with his wife (Cate Blanchett) become the focus of an international incident also involving a hardscrabble Moroccan farmer (Mustapha Rachidi) struggling to keep his two young sons in line and his family together. A San Diego nanny (Adriana Barraza), her employers absent, makes the disastrous decision to take their kids with her to a wedding in Mexico. And a deaf-mute Japanese teen (the extraordinary Rinko Kikuchi) deals with a relationship with her father (Koji Yakusho) and the world in general that’s been upended by the death of her mother. It is perhaps not surprising, or particularly original, that a gun is the device that ties these people together. Yet Babel isn’t merely about violence and its tragic consequnces. It’s about communication, and especially the lack of it–both intercultural, raising issus like terrorism and immigration, and intracultural, as basic as husbands talking to their wives and parents understanding their children. Inarritu’s command of his medium, sound and visual alike, is extraordinary; the camera work is by turns kinetic and restrained, the music always well matched to the scenes, the editing deft but not confusing, and the film (which clocks in at a lengthy 143 minutes) is filled with indelible moments. Many of those moments are also pretty stark and grim, and no will claim that all of this leads to a “happy” ending, but there is a sense of reconciliation, perhaps even resolution. “If You Want to be Understood… Listen,” goes the tagline. And if you want a movie that will leave you thinking, Babel is it. –Sam Graham

*** Stealing Harvard playing NOW!! ***

This is a great movie with Tammy Blanchard, Seymour Cassel, Dennis Farina, Mary Gillis, Tom Green (III)
Basically it’s about:
In Stealing Harvard, the charming Jason Lee (Chasing Amy, Almost Famous) wastes his talent playing John, a nice guy who once rashly promised his niece that he would pay for her college education. Now she’s been accepted into Harvard, and though John has just the right amount of money in the bank, that money is meant to buy a house for himself and his fiancee Elaine (Leslie Mann, Big Daddy). Afraid of disappointing his niece, John enlists his friend Duff (Tom Green, Freddy Got Fingered, Road Trip) on a spree of inane criminal escapades that go wrong. Lee is an engaging actor, but he can’t make the half-baked gags of Stealing Harvard funny. Similarly wasted are Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), Dennis Farina (Out of Sight, Snatch), Chris Penn (Reservoir Dogs, Short Cuts), and others. –Bret Fetzer
While I’ve watched Stealing Harvard a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, or just haven’t watched it in a while – why not watch it now? Of course you can watch it later – for free – check the image above to see how. It’s the best way I’ve found
