While I’ve watched Doc Hooker’s Bunch a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, or just haven’t watched it in a while – why not watch it now? Basically it’s about:
In the vastly overrated 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, author Peter Biskind puts the blame for Hollywood’s blockbuster mentality at least partially on Steven Spielberg’s box-office success with this adaptation of Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel. But you can’t blame Spielberg for making a terrific movie, which Jaws definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist business is suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley’s book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequnces of action and suspense supported by a trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who offers to hunt the shark down). The sequnces on Shaw’s boat–as the three of them realize that in fact the shark is hunting them–are what entertaining moviemaking is all about. –Marshall Fine

The sequl to Crest of the Stars (1999), Banner of the Stars (2000, a.k.a. Celestial Banner) builds toward its climax during the war between the forces of the Abh Empire and United Mankind. As in the earlier episodes, the storytelling is spotty at best, with the filmmakers devoting too much time to long and ultimately pointless conversations. In episode 6, Jinto and Lafiel dine with the sister of Baron Febdash, whom they killed three years earlier. All three participants are uncomfortable, a feeling the viewer is likely to share. Neither the discussions of dinner menus or the arguments about old relationships among the Abh commanders communicate the urgency and importance the approaching battle should warrant. Some elaborate CG battle scenes spice up some of the other episodes, but they aren’t particularly well-choreographed or exciting.
