Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction story “Nightfall” posited a world bathed in perpetual sunlight because of its six suns, which are all in constant orbit so one is always shining. But once every 2,000 years or so there is an eclipse that throws the plant into darkness and drives people mad. Asimov is after a comparison of religious superstition and scientific knowledge here, centered on the poetic sense of awe evoked when darkness falls and the stars are visible for the first time. The present filmed version loses all the poetry, exacting science, and subtlety of its inspiration and adds instead the wooden, uncommitted acting of David Carradine (Kung Fu) as a scientist, hordes of Indian extras (it seems to have been filmed in Bombay), and some botched pyrotechnic battle sequnces. Clearly the filmmakers lost their way from story to screen, opting instead for a Raiders of the Lost Ark feeling, with lots of lame action and adventure usurping the story’s core concept. The Asimov story has garnered top honors in poll after poll, including one done by the Science Fiction Writers of America, and the packaging tries to capitalize on that cachet. Understandable, since this movie has nothing else going for it. –Jim Gay

With a tantalizing “what-if?” scenario and a respectable cast of Hollywood veterans, The Final Countdown plays like a grand-scale episode of The Twilight Zone. It’s really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there’s still some life remaining in the movie’s basic premise: What if a modern-era Navy aircraft carrier–in this case the real-life nuclear-powered U.S.S. Nimitz–was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship’s commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescud senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn’t do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 “Jolly Roger” fighter jets, made possible by the Navy’s generous cooperation. That makes The Final Countdown a better Navy film than a full-fledged time-travel fantasy, but there’s a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would’ve done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double-bill with The Philadelphia Experiment. –Jeff Shannon

In reducing the rules of romance to a 10-day plan for repairing a breakup, Two Can Play That Game tickles a few funny bones while “keepin’ it real” about heartbreak and human behavior. Our hostess through this marathon of head games is 28-year-old Shante (Vivica A. Fox–emphasis on the fox), who speaks to the camera so much that critic Roger Ebert nicknamed this movie “Waiting to Inhale.” In a film packed with positive stereotypes (no crack-smoking gangstas here, thank you), she’s a successful marketing executive, and her straying boyfriend is a high-profile attorney (Morris Chestnut). Their turbulent romance survives Shante’s 10-day power play, but not all viewers will be so lucky, since this movie is alternately charming and aggravating, and there’s precious little romance while the lovers are plotting their moves. Still, it’s a safe bet that many people will appreciate this movie’s endearing lesson–namely, that sincere groveling can save you lots of time and heartache. –Jeff Shannon

Shirley Temple’s superstardom in the 1930s was associated with Twentieth Century Fox, but before Fox locked her down she made the two films for Paramount bundled here. It was 1934, her breakthrough year, and these pictures are not quite yet the showcase vehicles Fox would assemble for their pint-sized meal ticket. In Little Miss Marker, Shirley comes under the wing of Sorrowful Jones (Adolphe Menjou in good form), as Damon Runyon’s world of bookies and gamblers and soft-hearted gangsters comes to life around her. It’s a heartstring-tugger of an expert kind; Shirley’s final line, delivered in an operating room, should have grown men weeping on their knees.
Henry Hathaway’s Now and Forever casts Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard as world-traveling con artists, suddenly forced to grow up when Coop decides to take charge of his daughter. The lure of diamonds and the easy life is never far away, but rely on Shirley to keep her Daddy on his toes. The dimpled Ms. Temple plays a distinctly supporting role in this one, and her singing and dancing is limited compared to the vehicles she would command within the year. Cooper is all charm, although Lombard is stuck in something of a nag role. Still, a solid enough studio picture of the era, and a logical launching pad for the greatest child star in film history. –Robert Horton
