Download John Le Carre's A Perfect Spy Online!

This is a great movie with Peter Egan, Ray McAnally, Alan Howard, Rudiger Weigang, Jane Booker

Basically it’s about:
What traits of nature and nurture go into the making of a master of deception? British agent Magnus Pym’s training begins in a chaotic childhood. His charismatic con man father trades secrets for love, bouncing in and out of jail and his son’s life. Schooled at Oxford and mentored by two masters of espionage, Magnus is poised for greatness except that his mentors are on opposite sides of the battle.

With characters drawn from his own life, le Carre weaves a gripping tale of international intrigu brilliantly adapted for the BBC by Arthur Hopcraft, who also adapted le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy for television. A Perfect Spy stars Peter Egan (Reilly: Ace of Spies) and Ray McAnally (A Very British Coup) with an exceptional supporting cast featuring Alan Howard, Peggy Ashcroft, and Sarah Badel.

While I’ve watched John Le Carre’s A Perfect Spy a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, or just haven’t watched it in a while – why not watch it now? Of course you can watch it later – for free – check the image above to see how. It’s the best way I’ve found

Hideous Kinky

*** watch Hideous Kinky!! ***

Hideous Kinky journeys back to the early 1970s to Marrakesh, that hippy mecca for everyone from Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix to Gillies MacKinnon, the director of this movie. Here you’ll find one nice but confused middle-class young woman escaping the daily grind of a drab London with her two young daughters in tow. Whereas Esther Freud’s book was told from the younger girl’s perspective, the film-script places Julia centre-stage as she searches for what she describes wistfully as “the annihilation of the ego.”

Though fresh from her Titanic experience, Kate Winslet is no drippy hippy, bringing a refreshing feistiness to her role and looking fetching swathed in diaphanous layers. As her two daughters, Bella Riza (Bea, the wide-eyed younger one) and Carrie Mullan (Lucy, the sensible one) are brilliant discoveries–unselfconscious, charmingly quirky, and enjoying a camaraderie that belies their difference in characters. Completing the family unit is Julia’s lover, the endearingly unreliable Bilal (a fiery performance from Sald Taghmaoui). When the money runs out, their adventures begin and the resilience and practicality of the girls is contrasted throughout with the dreaminess of their mother, her sense of duty vying with her qust for self-discovery. Visually, it’s a veritable feast as we’re pitched from the color and cacophony of the marketplace to the dusty harshness of the mountains. And that elusive title–which is never explained in the film–is in fact a phrase coined by the girls as a term of approbation. –Harriet Smith

Hideous Kinky is awesome. I’ve probably seen it 20 times, and I never get tired of it. Have you seen it? If you click the image above you can learn how you can watch it now, or any time.

Review of Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow Online

—————

The first feature based on the popular adventure-comedy Naruto, Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow takes knuckle-headed ninja-in-training Naruto Uzumaki to an unexpected place: a film set. With Sakura, Sasuke, and Kakashi-sensei, he must protect Yukie Fujikaze, the temperamental star of a series of period melodramas. Yukie is rude to her fans (including Naruto), throws tantrums, gets drunk, and mistreats her co-workers. But she doesn’t seem to be in any danger until the director decides to shoot her new film in the Land of Snow. In the frozen north, the ninja bodyguards discover Yukie is really Koyuki Kazehana, the long-lost princess of an icebound realm that’s been usurped by her evil uncle Doto. Naruto and his friends use exotic jutsu (and plain brute strength) to defeat Doto’s minions. The Naruto TV series takes place in a timeless Neverland, and the regular characters feel out of place in a modern setting, making jokes about movie-making. But the film plays like an extended episode of the show, with Naruto’s boy-scout-from-the-wrong-side-of-the-tracks determination and perseverance winning the day–as his fans expect. (Unrated, suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, alcohol use) –Charles Solomon

Who's the Boss? - The Complete First Season review and you can watch it online

*** watch Who’s the Boss? – The Complete First Season!! ***

Who’s the Boss? – The Complete First Season is awesome. I’ve probably seen it 20 times, and I never get tired of it. Have you seen it? If you click the image above you can learn how you can watch it now, or any time.

The movie stars:
Scott Bloom, Robin Thomas, Candice Azzara, Shana Lane-Block, Vic Polizos

and here’s the plot:
Who’s the Boss? was a standard sitcom–turned on its head. Sure, there was a mom, a dad, two cute kids, a house in the suburbs… and a live studio audience. But Angela Bower (Judith Light) was a single advertising exec with a son (Danny Pintauro) and Tony Micelli (Tony Danza) was a widowed ex-ballplayer with a daughter (future Charmed star Alyssa Milano). The Connecticut mansion belonged to Angela (along with the big ’80s hair and shoulder pads) and Tony wasn’t her boyfriend, but rather her housekeeper. Then there was her mother, Mona (the incomparable Katherine Helmond). The sexed-up, slightly cracked grandmother is a primetime staple, but in the former Soap matriarch’s hands, the character was a cut above (and usually got the best lines). As Angela complains to her in the pilot, “You’ve sent me a man for a housekeeper!” “Oh, don’t be sexist,” Mona replies. “A man can do meaningless, unproductive work just as well as a woman.”

“Meaningless, unproductive work” is what Tony does for the Bowers–and does well–but he and Samantha (Milano) also become part of the family. Angela and Tony go on a number of dates with other people, but there’s an obvious sexual tension between them. The show would continu to exploit that tension for eight seasons to great success (even inspiring a British version called The Upper Hand, with Honor Blackman as the “Mona” character). Helmond, meanwhile, would garner an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her efforts. Highlights include “Mona Gets Pinned,” in which Mona takes up with a younger man, and “Angela’s Ex, Part I,” in which Angela reconciles with her estranged husband–who proceeds to fire Tony. Gust stars include Betty White (Mary Tyler Moore) in “Eye on Angela” and Danza’s Taxi co-star Jeff Conoway in “First Kiss.” –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Timeline - 1941 review and you can watch it online

*** watch Timeline – 1941!! ***

A varied collection of vintage newsreel clips, audio material, and even movie trailers documents 1941, a year in which America tried to focus on a spectacular baseball season though entry into World War II would prove to be inevitable. The Movietone newsreel footage assembled in this collection contains lighthearted segments on the crowning of a new Miss America, a cotton picking contest, a motorboat show, and the New York Yankees defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series. But the war news dominates. Dramatic footage shows damage from German air raids over London, including scenes of bomb damage on the famed clock Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the House of Commons. The biggest news event of 1941 was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and as it happened a Movietone cameraman was at the naval base to film the fleet. His footage, which was first approved by government authorities, is remarkable, showing the battleship Arizona as it burned after being bombed. An audio portion of the disc (still images are shown onscreen while it plays) contains live broadcasts by the bands of Harry James and Glenn Miller, and news broadcasts, including the entire “date which will live in infamy” speech President Roosevelt delivered before Congress following the Pearl Harbor attack. A collection of five movie trailers from 1941, including an unusual and innovative trailer for Citizen Kane, completes an informative and entertaining look at a remarkable year. –Robert J. McNamara

Do you like Sandra Bullock? If you do, then you’ll LOVE The Net!

Amazon has a great deal on The Net here

If you haven’t heard of The Net, here’s a quick plot:
The Net, the first of Hollywood’s big cyberthrillers of the mid-1990s, was also the most successful, thanks in large part to the natural appeal of star Sandra Bullock. Still riding high from Speed and While You Were Sleeping, Bullock plays a computer expert victimized by sinister cyberforces who steal her identity for reasons unknown. It’s a clever combination of high-tech paranoia and Hitchcockian references (including Jeremy Northam as a romantic stranger named Devlin, after Cary Grant in Notorious). Film historians may look back someday on films like this–Roger Ebert calls them “hacksploitation”–to see what they reveal about our society’s reaction to the increasing role of technology in our lives, just as we now study the fears of Communism and the atom bomb reflected in films of the 1950s.
