One of Michael Caine’s best movies. If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no time like the present! If you’ve already seen it, it’ll be even better this time!

Thirty-five years after Michael Caine played the role of crass boy-toy Milo Tindle in Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s screen adaptation of Anthony Shaffer’s hit play Sleuth, the actor takes over his 1972 co-star Laurence Olivier’s role of rich cuckold Andrew Wyke in Kenneth Branagh’s updated remake of the same story. Where Olivier brought a seething, upper-class disgust to mystery-novelist Wyke’s attitude toward Tindle–who is having an affair with the former’s wife and has come to the writer’s mansion to requst that Wyke divorce her–Caine basks in the comic absurdity of a superficial man like Tindle (Jude Law) led by the nose into one or another illusion of happiness. The new film’s script by Harold Pinter has the arid air of expectation familiar to his work, the weight of things not said whenever someone speaks. That’s a considerable weight indeed, in Sleuth’s story of a psychological contest between two very different men who despise one another beneath outward civility.

The story finds Tindle arriving at Wyke’s home. Following various small humiliations, he is invited by the older man to steal his wife’s jewels in a scheme that benefits everyone. There’s more than meets the eye to Wyke’s proposal, however, leading to unexpected developments and surprises in the film’s second half. Branagh’s direction is suitably cool and sleek in the beginning, when the characters’ emotions are still in check and the oddness of Wyke’s gadget-filled world is still entertaining to behold. (The film’s set design is one of its strongest elements.) But once voices rise and threats appear and the like, Branagh can’t seem to penetrate the surface of things. Unlike Mankiewicz’s take, the new version is caught up in the insularity of the characters’ tit-for-tat gamesmanship, lacking the intriguing, class-warfare subtext of the earlier work. A gay angle thrown into the last half-hour sits uncomfortably and irrelevantly with the rest of the material. The best thing about this Sleuth are the performances of Law and Caine, who could have been even better with a great script. –Tom Keogh

and here’s the plot:
Peter Cattaneo’s Lucky Break is a likable comedy that suffered by being compared with his earlier hit The Full Monty, but is attractive enough in its own right. Charming, incompetent bank robber Jimmy Hands (James Nesbitt), five years into a 12-year sentence, puts together an escape plan that exploits the desire of the stage-struck prison governor (Christopher Plummer) to see his musical about the life of Nelson performed. The plan gets ever more complicated as he finds himself wanting to wreck the career of a bullying prison officer, trying to outwit an unpleasant thug who wants to supplant his original accomplices, and weighing the idea of escape at all against his growing relationship with anger-management trainer Annabel (Olivia Williams).

This is an intelligent caper film with some underlying serious tones. Jimmy slowly comes to realize that crime involves mixing with some unpleasant people. The backstage musical stuff–with its wonderfully fatuous ex-Cambridge director and a score just the right side of dreadful–is hilarious, and the plot’s convoluted central scam is efficient as it plays out. If there is an overall failure, it comes from the clash between the film’s farcical elements and the bittersweet quality of its central relationship, as well as Timothy Spall’s portrayal of the victimized Cliff. –Roz Kaveney

Somewhere into the so-so “Itsy Bitsy Spider” segment, the sinking feeling that Kids’ Favorite Songs 2 is strictly sequl material sets in. This is a march down Sesame Street on a slow day, when the loopy monster misunderstandings and goofball gags miss a rare beat or two. Still, making merry is what the Sesame crew does best, and they succeed here, if on a less brilliant level than we’ve come to expect. All the usual favorites, like “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “The Ants Go Marching,” get the gang and their real-life kid friends grooving, and a running joke involving a renegade meatball keeps kids 18 months to 5 tuned in to the end. If you haven’t heard of Cavalry Charge, here’s a quick plot:
This 88 minute film details the rousing adventure of two brothers who join opposing sides of the civil war conflict. Former president, Ronald Reagan, is Vance Britton, the commander of a group of Confederates plundering Union gold shipments and wreaking havoc on the settlers of the Santa Fe Trail. Bruce Bennet is Jeb Britton, the commander of theUnion forces sent to the frontier to seek out and destroy this Confederate menace; unaware it is his brother who is the target. When Vance and his brother are unexpectedly united on the frontier, sparks fly, and they reluctantly put aside their differences to try and save a small town from the rampaging Apache Indians.

If you like Ronald Reagan, then you’ll LOVE Cavalry Charge! Watch it for the first time, or just watch it again! I really enjoyed this movie.
